Helicopter Engagement Shoot ~ Okanagan Wedding Photographer

Monday, June 14th, 2010

This engagement session was such a fun adventure! Della and Doug own a helicopter (Doug flies it) and asked if they could pick me up in Oyama. I drove out to meet them and they landed in a random field where I ran out to hop in. I felt like a secret agent. : D All the neighbors came out with their cameras- it was kinda neat. We took off and flew over the gorgeous green waters of Kalamalka Lake. This is where Della and Doug pretty much won my heart by saying I could pretty much choose anywhere (in reason of course) to touch down. So with my bird’s eye view, I spotted this great field that I knew I had to photograph in. They made me want to get a helicopter so I could take couples wherever I wanted to go ALL the time! haha. I wish!

We touched down and spent the next hour taking photos in a beautiful big green field. We saw an interesting red contraption from across the field and when we went to investigate we found this huge piece of farm equipment that looked like it had been sitting there for years. A tree had even grown out of it.

When we finally had to lift off, Doug flew us around the new Sparkling Hill Resort on the way back and it was fun to get such an up close interesting view of the gorgeous new development. Sparkling Hill Resort is where Della is getting ready for her wedding in August, before moving on to Summerhill Winery in Kelowna for the ceremony and reception!

I had a great time with Della and Doug- they’re a really fun couple with a bit of a rocker edge which I totally dig. Thanks so much for the adventurous shoot you two!

Rock the Frock~ a rainy day trash the dress

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Danielle from Stage Right Etc and I decided it would be fun to get another shoot out of the awesome DIY dress that she put together. So we set off for a road trip from Kelowna, BC down south. It rained the whole day but didn’t let that stop us. On a whim I pulled Danielle into one of my favorite second hand book shops to get out of the rain and it turned out to be an awesome backdrop! And of course we had to work the rain and mud into our shoot so we found a very large area full of grey mud and Danielle started running around jumping in huge puddles, rolling in the mud, while I tried to take photos while not slipping or sinking too far down in the mud, all the while holding an umbrella with one hand and shooting with the othe. “Why did I not bring an assistant to this shoot,” went through my head many times. haha. We also found a great field of purple flowers to  take photos in as well as a gutted empty building that I’ve been wanting to shoot at for a couple years but never got around to driving down south to it. Overall- a really fun day trip scavenger hunt for good photos! Thanks for the fun day and countless laughs Danielle. ; D

This Trash the Dress shoot pairs up with the Vintage Wedding shoot that I did with Stage Right Etc which got featured on Style Me Pretty.

Big thanks to Amrit Jonhson from La Casa Hair Lounge (on Pandosy in Kelowna ) for the awesome cut and dye job with Danielle’s hair!

The rare and elusive “Dani Bird.”

Sparky Jones Accessories

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

I rarely do commercial work but when someone with a really cool product or idea approaches me, I usually give in pretty quick! ; D Jemima- the creator and designer behind Sparky Jones contacted me in early spring about taking some photos, displaying her assortment of hats, obis, earrings, wallets and hair accessories for her site. As soon as I saw some of her work, the colours and fun retro, vintage feel of the items grabbed me and I agreed right away as it sounded like fun! A month or so later, I was at Jemima’s house meeting her for the first time. Jemima immigrated from Australia about 10 years ago and tank goodness she hasn’t lost her wicked accent. Her energy is so infectious and I had such a blast with you. She’s one of those people who you feel instantly friends with and just has a spunk and charm about her. Despite being a very windy day, we made it work and I’m happy with the result!

I recommend you all visit her website at http://www.sparkyjones.ca/ to check out her awesome stuff. Spread the word! Looking at the photos again for the post, I’m already writing a mental shopping list!

This was a fun, spontaneous brain flash. She had a fun style to her house so I asked on a whim if she had any tea cups. Low and behold she did and then I saw this cool old chipped chair to boot. Happy how these turned out!

I just liked this little behind-the scenes shot. I think Jemima ducked in her house at this point to get some more hot coffee to keep herself warm in the wind!

Jemima’s dog, Daisy really wanted to be in the picture- how could I say know to a dog as cute as that?
